Leiden for a Day: Old Neighbours, a Hot Canal, and a Proper Tan

Leiden for a Day: Old Neighbours, a Hot Canal, and a Proper Tan

Picture this: we have just done Amsterdam—bikes, canals, the whole “are we the problem or is everyone else also walking in the bike lane?” experience—and the sensible move is to charge straight through toward wherever the map says next. We did not do the sensible move. We peeled off for one day in Leiden, because good friends live there, and “we’ll just say hi” is how road trips quietly become the best part of the trip.

Old neighbours, new city

These are friends we knew as neighbours in Singapore—the kind of people who already know how you take your coffee and how loud you get about parking. They live in Leiden now, and they did what great hosts do: they showed us around instead of sending a Google Maps pin and hoping for the best.

Brick. Canals. Bikes that treat pedestrians as optional NPCs. A mill sliding into view from the water like someone had ordered “Dutch backdrop, please.” We wandered with them, asked dumb tourist questions with zero shame, and let the city unfold at friend-pace—which is much nicer than guidebook-pace.

The boat: two hours of sun with benefits

Then came the heart of the day: a ~2 hour boat ride on a hot summer day, open boat, no ceiling to hide under, just canal water and the kind of sunshine that feels friendly until your shoulders file a formal complaint.

Alex took a turn at the wheel—pink shirt, cap, sunglasses, the full “I am definitely a boat guy now” starter pack. Cristyne soaked up the sun like she had a professional appointment with vitamin D. We got a good tan and a bit of burn, which is Holland’s way of saying “welcome, please apply lotion next time.” Mill from the water. Drawbridge. Café tables along the quay. Stone bridge. Someone waving at the camera like we were in a tourism brochure that accidentally developed a personality.

If you ever need proof that a one-day stop can still feel like a whole holiday chapter: this was it. Laughing on a cream-colored little boat while Leiden did its scenic best in the background. No agenda beyond “don’t hit the houseboat” and “yes, another photo.”

Dinner, then south

We closed the day the right way: a lovely dinner with those same friends—four around the table, warm room, the soft glow of “we actually caught up” instead of “we meant to.” Sun-tired and properly fed is an underrated combination.

Then we rolled on toward a stay near Rotterdam. More on that later—this post is Leiden’s, and Leiden earned it.

Key takeaways

  1. One day is enough when friends play tour guide—skip the “we’ll come back someday” guilt and just go.
  2. Open boat + hot day = tan with a side of burn. Sunscreen is not a personality flaw.
  3. Canals from water level beat any postcard you already thought you understood.
  4. Dinner with old neighbours turns a stopover into a real day.

We left Leiden pinker, happier, and already half-thinking about when we could float that canal again.

Tot ziens, Leiden—you had us at “hop in, we’ll show you around.”
